There is a young farmhand out here which can never stay employed for more than a few months. I see him from time to time, he is an intelligent young man, who can accomplish a lot if he puts his mind to it, but then a short-while thereafter he will stay out all night carousing and spending too much time at the watering hole and his work will suffer and eventually he will not show up to any job. A bit while later penniless he will return to work more enthusiastic than the first.
I guess in some ways he reminds me a bit of my own youth too, not in his fondness for drink, but in his triumphs but then subsequent disappointments. I too can remember in my youth my English teacher, Professor Henner-berry, cursing me wildly for not applying the, not so obvious to me, intelligence he thought I contained but rarely let out. My Latin instructor Professor Collings & Monsieur the Frenchman all trying to get the best out of me, but not seeing it bubble to the surface. How could I forget Henner-berry sending me home with an eloquent note to my parents about how I was “digging myself deeper and deeper into a big hole”.
This wild young farmhand you can tell has a bit of intelligence in there too and so, from my experience, with a young man who's a bit smart, lacking any proper direction, that intelligence will inevitably lead to his undoing. For the intelligent man needs to be watched very closely or his virtues for curiosity will quickly turn to vices for simple pleasures. And much to our own vexing, unlike a glorious cat, we have not nine lives, but just a few.
Now alternatively the not-so-bright man dares not stray too far from his own intelligence for he knows that his own lacking will quickly be turned against him. His own mental naivety will quickly be turned into his own suffering.
I wish this young man the best but I fear in a few years he will be unrecognizable to his current self. Perhaps it is only when we hit the bottom that we can push our legs and come back up to the surface.
