A young friend of mine, full of potential, about to embark on his own newfound journey to an agrarian future, said recently:
"I'm just itching to get going..."
I know how much that "itching to get going" wears on you when you first start out to face an Agrarian Future... But the good news is, You've already decided that you want to "get going" and try something else with life. The journey is some of the best parts. Don't rush to reach your end goal of failing fast & hard or even some formidable success.
You have so much to learn going forward. You have a whole new way of living to get used to. You run the risk of learning too much too quickly and becoming overwhelmed. First you must learn to crawl in order to walk then run. The naive things you start out doing will be the things you laugh at years later. You build confidence each season but you always have lingering doubts. This is the life of the agrarian.
You also need to start learning how to live on your own and free from an urban landscape. The urban landscape coddles you from really learning what it is to generate your own electricity and dump your own turds. Modernity to some extent keeps us from facing life and its true Nature. Man's true nature.
Spartan Ethos
It is a minimalist ethos. It is the opposite of everyone you see around you in the world. They all want more and more things. They all toil, and implore you to toil too, in order to acquire these things. You must be able to survive on very little. Thrive even. It is when you have too much, it creates clutter, that is when you feel un-ease & restlessness. The Spartan ethos, the perfect mindset for a man who has detached himself from the system.
The Awakener
Awakeners are men who come from an immanent, immutable, and permanent world, that ‘other world’ that lies parallel to ours, arriving here to accomplish a mission. These men have no other concern than to pass on their knowledge and energy; and their entire life ends up being devoted to this transmission. Awakeners appear in critical periods of history, when everything has been turned upside down, all values reversed, and when the situation seems desperate. They give their mission priority over their own person, their personal interest and comfort. Their rule of thumb is the following one: do what you must, without anticipating success.
Ever since I was a young man I always wanted to be the man behind the scenes, the man behind the curtain, the man behind the iron mask. The one you would have to lift the veil to see what's underneath. I always knew that if I shown too brightly I would burn out. Whereas others glowed in the limelight of success I always feigned too humble to make up for far too much hubris.
Always the defiant one, building my own world behind the stage, letting people peer behind the curtain, get a glimpse and want more, but never fully allowing them into the fold. The ever recluse...
It is through this blog, through the arts and music I've made, my family and through my goats that I wish to be remembered. The man, the myth, the legend, but did anyone ever really know him?
