Book Review of "Human Smoke: The Beginnings of World War II, the End of Civilization"
Book by Nicolson Baker
None of the mayhem & barbarism. None of the anguish & death. None of the casualties of World War II should have even happened. That is what one is left pondering after you finish reading this book.
Through pain-staking chronological references to newspapers articles, diaries, the public proclamations of the time, author Nicolson Baker simply catalogs in order, the events that surround WW2.
I first heard of this book from a recent Michael Malice interview with Curtis Yarvin and as an amateur history buff & an interested student of western history, I thought it should be a good read. Boy was it.
I thought I had know what WW2 was all about but apparently I barely had a clue. What I had been taught was that America & Britain never wanted war. That German and Japanese greed & aggression forced it upon us. That Neville Chamberlain was an appeaser and Churchill and Roosevelt saved the World from Terror.
In reality, and what you find in this book is that it was Churchill, the World War I veteran who wanted to bomb every German "Hun" back to the stone age. Roosevelt, the industrial-militarist who deceived America in order to supply planes, bombs and build military bases across the Pacific. Japan, the lonely empire in the East, who, like Germany, wanted to make its mark on its region. Hitler, the strongman, still hurting from the Treaty of Versailles, hell-bent on destroying Jews & who was easily & successfully goaded into sudden escalation & eventual defeat.
They say "The first casualty of War is Truth". No more is that better exemplified as on the pages of this book.
One most telling example of this deception against the American people is on October 27th 1941 Roosevelt gave a speech at the Mayflower Hotel.
"Hitler often claimed", said Roosevelt, "that he had no designs on the Americas". But Roosevelt had evidence to the contrary. “I have in my possession a secret map made in Germany by Hitler’s government,” Roosevelt said. The map showed existing boundaries obliterated, the Panama Canal absorbed, and Latin American countries turned into “vassal states” of Germany. “This map makes clear the Nazi design not only against South America but against the United States itself.” He did not show the map of course, for it showed nothing he had claimed. In fact, the map was a British Forgery.
Super secret foreign dossiers to influence Democracies... Sound familiar?
None of the great characters that ruled empires walk away from the catalog of this book with a clean record. Through Baker's in depth citations and chronological records you find that History is written by the Victors, for the daily record-keeping tells a different story than we had been taught in the schools and universities.
In the end Baker lays tribute to the many Pacifists and promoters of non-violence that failed to end the war from happening. They failed to save the Jewish refugees. They failed to feed the millions starving in a bombed out Europe. They failed to reconcile the United States & Japan towards Peace. They failed, but they were right all along the way.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the events that surrounded that god awful war.
