How do we get people to remove themselves from the world of politics? We try to lead by example the best that we can.
We ignore the news. We turn off all notifications. We switch to a flip phone. We stop checking news sites. These websites have become pretty worthless the last few years with redundant partisan crap anyways. The endless political train wreck, do you really need to ride that train?
We don't have any news apps or anything to constantly notify us about what's going on in the world. If we do hear news it's third-hand or through memes. We do still dabble in the salty memes from time to time. Old habits die hard.
How exactly do I get the people around me to stop paying attention, to turn their cheek against politics, like me, to do an about face? Politics is such a self-defeating game of dueling narratives and opinions, stagecraft on a larger scale, propaganda at its finest. If you're not willing to admit this you're probably too far gone at this point for me to help. This applies to all sides of the political spectrum.
Deeply Held Hypocrisy
Does pointing out the changing winds of political hypocrisy help? Probably not. But then again it is the only strategy I can think of at the moment.
Whenever Biden supports something dumb, like warrantless confiscation of guns or bombing Syria, whatever... Point out how Trump supported "red flag" laws & bump stock bans, he bombed Syria too. I doubt this tactic will work, but I am not sure how else to save folks from the cesspool of Politics. Many of these people deserve saving.
I'm even more doubtful that this would work on Democrats. There is nothing anyone could say or do to turn them against their party. Biden could ship machine guns to Syria while confiscating guns from Americans, lock up kids in saran wrap burritos all day long, like some dystopian Chipotle, like Trump, he could murder someone in cold blood in Times Square and nothing would get his supporters to become A-political...
Sometimes I still hold out hope that Republicans can get the hell out of politics and conserve what little dignity they have left. Highly unlikely but it's still a small hope, a glimmer of optimism! I mean, after-all how could Trump voters be so blind after the last 4 years? Did they really not see how easy it was to manipulate the Trumpenreich? Manipulate how exactly:
-Into hating Russia (Seriously, can’t we just love them already?).
-Into using Covid, the Lock-downs, the Vaccines, support or lack thereof against him & his own supporters.
-Using the capital riots against his own supporters.
No one is immune from the way the media controls the populous via control of the mob-at-large. One such man can only resist it so much in this environs. This is just yet another reason to become a-political. To leave the political realm. To not let it touch you. To make your own world where Caesar does not exist. The path of the Mennonite.
Will you join me?
If some of you truly do believe that the election was stolen from you, then why exactly are you still voting? How can you not see that Democracy itself was a failed concept from the start and became even more null & void when technology took over? Marketing & media moguls control the daily narrative on both sides. How could Conservatives own embrace of Capitalism & Materialism, How could they not see that this embrace of Capital & Technology would eventually be their own undoing?
Whereas a wise man from his remote cabin once said.
The conservatives are fools: They whine about the decay of traditional values, yet they enthusiastically support technological progress and economic growth. Apparently it never occurs to them that you can’t make rapid, drastic changes in the technology and the economy of a society without causing rapid changes in all other aspects of the society as well, and that such rapid changes inevitably break down traditional values.
The breakdown of traditional values to some extent implies the breakdown of the bonds that hold together traditional small-scale social groups. The disintegration of small-scale social groups is also promoted by the fact that modern conditions often require or tempt individuals to move to new locations, separating themselves from their communities. Beyond that, a technological society HAS TO weaken family ties and local communities if it is to function efficiently. In modern society an individual’s loyalty must be first to the system and only secondarily to a small-scale community, because if the internal loyalties of small-scale communities were stronger than loyalty to the system, such communities would pursue their own advantage at the expense of the system.
My message to Democrats - Why you should too become A-Political.
I was born in Massachusetts and I was educated in some of its finest schools so in some ways I know the psyche of the modern liberal very well. They honestly do think that they have America, and the greater World’s best interests at heart. They really are bleeding hearts. They really do Believe in the gospel of “I am my brother's keeper” and “the meek shall inherit the Earth”, just on a larger Government scale. They love the idea of egalitarianism, Equality for all. Many of them are also very Capitalistic, But when that comes up against egalitarianism, They believe that Capitalism too should be tempered.
They believe that politics is a useful tool for promoting their noble truths and ideals. One-man one-vote, Liberalism and Democracy as one in shaping the world to be a more noble and progressive place. They support majoritarian politics but while also promoting minority interests, unless of course it is the minority of extreme individualism. As you can see they think of themselves as a moderate bunch, a nexus between idealism and communitarianism, far from, as they see it, the divisive extremism of their opponents.
Why should they become A-Political then? Why should they eschew the Democratization that they love, thrive on & believe in?
Reality-check time
Have they been on social media lately? Have they spent much time with young folk who have? Does the country seem more united than ever? Or divided? Do the young people they talk to have a bright outlook for their future in the Country? Has technology enriched their lives for the better? How is this all going exactly? Do they too like the drone-strikes to spread “muh democracy?” Do they like what the mechanization of society is doing to the Earth? How those temps lately? Getting a little hot under the collar are you? Are these questions just a little too probing? Where do you see this Democracy headed exactly?
As Short-Sighted as Conservatives.
How could Democrats fall prey to the same issue as the Conservatives that I mentioned earlier? After all, you're much smarter & better educated than them. How can you then not see that Capitalism and Technology undermines your cause too?! You can only mix Capitalism with Communitarianism so much before it breaks. Which is it friends? You want to “have your cake and eat it too”, but that is not how “reality” works. There is only so much cake to go around, at the expense of some third world impoverished farmers toil & ecology.
Do not take my word for it, from the book “A Small Farm Future” by Chris Smaje where he quotes from Historian Andro Linklater:
At one period in my life, I believed passionately in … egalitarian ideals, and lived for longer than was sensible on communes in the United States and Europe, farming unproductive, steeply sloping fields locked away in the mountains unwanted by their original owner. The experience offered a salutary lesson in understanding how ownership of the earth shapes the way society is organized. The most attractive qualities of a primitive commune, sharing the labor and the rewards, turned out to be its most destructive. It was not the group but an individual who actually plowed the field, dug the ditch, milked the goats, and made the granola. Over time, it became obvious that some performed these tasks better, or more slowly, or more lazily, than others, and so the tasks either had to be organized with rigid efficiency to spread the burden fairly, or … dissensions … boiled up and tore the community apart … Far from being able to dispense with government, equal ownership entailed a surprising intensity of organization and policing of personal foibles.
So much for the Communal Utopia, aye Comrades? In our modern technological world, where half the planet is high on opiates and video games, and no one has a clue how to feed themselves outside of a grocery store, How are your notions of egalitarianism working exactly? Can the urban hellscape continue to live on the backs of the impoverished world, ruining their environment, in the name of modernity?
Ultimately, Why you should remove yourself from politics
Your life immediately becomes better when you remove yourself from politics. You have more time to read the classics, More time to write, More time to spend with your loved ones. More time to smell the roses. Imagine if you got rid of your smartphone too?
Did you stop to think about how 99% of the news that you receive, being notifications or however the hell you receive it, heck probably even 99.999% of it, will never ever affect your day-to-day life. Some might ask, but then how will you be informed when it's time to vote?
You still vote? You really are naive aren't you. Stop encouraging those bastards. Do you think that the Amish spend one moment of their life thinking about politics? Meanwhile they have created their own world where they flourish and happily toil within a strong & happy community.
Culture.
What do you want your culture to be exactly? Is the day to day political-battle really something that should be emblematic of your society & world? Do you think these political-battles lift you up for the most part? Or do they bring you down?
Those times when you do win and you feel the joy of a hard fought political-battle, Do you still remember all those times you lost and felt helpless? If you leave the political realm and stop voting, What then becomes of politics? Nothing at all of course, It continues to dominate the lives of those who still pay attention to it, those who are still enraptured in its harsh caress.
The Great Weakness of being Political.
There was a time a long time ago when the Amish had to hire some lawyers to defend themselves from a political battle which started affecting their horses & cows. Franklin Delano Roosevelt had passed the Social Security Insurance program, funny how we seem to have dropped the insurance part. Well these Amish consider insurance a gamble, and gambling is of course a sin to these pious folks. They wanted no part of this Roosevelt-Casino program. When they failed to pay their SSI taxes, the IRS saw that they had no bank accounts to confiscate, so they started confiscating their horses & cows instead. Well luckily the Congress at the time thought this whole thing was a little ridiculous and so they created an exemption for these religious orders that existed prior to 1950.
Hypothetical Question. If instead of these Amish being completely non-political, anti-militarist, and generally outside of the realm of the modern, let's just say that these had been, instead of these religious types, they had been Political Zealots, wearing t-shirts with political slogans and all. Fervent proponents of either the Democrat, Republican or Lolbertarian & Green parties. Do you then think that they would have been given the choice to opt-out of Roosevelt's program, if they had been involved in politics?
I realize this is one of those hypothetical questions that no one can have a firm answer for, but let's just say this was a band of hardcore Trumpsters who didn't want to pay a tax, or Antifa types, who no longer wanted to pay taxes which support drone bombs in Syria, would they too get an exemption based on “heart-felt” religious-notions?
I would think not. No friggin way. One of the opposing political sides would want to punish them, to make an example of them. As you can see the only people who get to be exempted from politics are those who never had anything to do with it in the first place. Once you embrace politics, it intertwines you in their world, a world you should have nothing to want to do with. A world which simply involves propaganda and force wielded against your opponent. Why would anyone want this sort of immortality under their name, their vote?
To put it more bluntly, the government is really mean to people who are political. Stop playing the heel to either side of your enemy. Stop getting caught up in the fervor of getting back at your political opponent. Stop getting caught up in the day-to-day Realpolitik. Reject the System and become A-Political.
A Look Back
I remember getting into a political battle years ago with an old friend whom passed away this last week, and I remember him saying to me, "you are smarter than this". It may have pissed me off at the time because he really wasn’t arguing against my political position, just the intelligence of it, but...
He made a valid point, of course he did. In fact he was right all along. Politics is beneath all of our intelligences. He was 100% correct.
